Gaines Crowned King of the Midwest!
Mitchell, Indiana’s Dickie Gaines, picked up his second career win at Lawrenceburg Speedway since the track was reconfigured back in 2008. In doing so, he was crowned King of the Midwest and picked up the $2500 winner’s purse. Gaines had a quick car all night, and at the start of the 25 lap Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint car feature, he showed that his car was the one to beat. He quickly made his way from his 5th starting spot to second where he followed Jon Stanbrough who grabbed the lead on the opening lap. Stanbrough had built up a 15 car length lead when Gaines reached the runner up spot but Gaines was catching the leader, lap after lap. Gaines was able to pass Stanbrough relatively easily but not able to pull away from him. The leaders encountered lapped traffic and that allowed Stanbrough to stay within striking distance of Gaines. That being said, Gaines would not be challenged the rest of the race, winning the right to be crowned “King of the Midwest” Stanbrough finished second followed by defending track champ, Jarrett Andretti, JJ Hughes, and Shawn Westerfeld. Heat race winners were Drew Abel and Shawn Westerfeld. The Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint cars return to the Burg next Saturday May 20th along with the BOSS Sprint Cars.
Herbert Wins Second of Year!
Greensburg, Indiana’s Kyle Herbert is off to a fantastic start in 2017 winning 2 of the first 4 Budweiser UMP Modified Features at Lawrenceburg. Herbert would take the lead on the drop of the green flag from the pole position. Joey Kramer, from his 4th starting spot would quickly move to second setting up Herbert and Kramer, for a tight and exciting battle for the lead. Kramer could pull alongside Herbert, but could not complete the pass. On a restart following a caution, Kramer passed Herbert on the inside but before a lap could be completed, the caution came out relegating Kramer back to second on the restart. Herbert was then able to protect the bottom of the track so Kramer was never able to try the inside on a restart. Herbert held on for his second win of the year and 3rd of his career. Kramer finished second followed by Scotty Kincaid, Brock Burton, and David Spille. Heat race winners were Kramer, Cory Skipton, and Kyle Schornick. The Budweiser UMP Modifieds return to the track on Saturday May 20th.
Gage Clark wins Hornet Feature!
Defending Besslers U Pull N Save Hornet Champion, Gage Clark finally had the car he wanted and was able to win his first feature of the year. It wouldn’t come easy as his future brother in law, Cordell Moore who won the last Hornet Feature would start 10th and quickly make his way to second. The two future relatives would race just a car length apart the entire 12 laps creating a tense situation for the Clark/Moore family as well as the fans in the stand. Moore did everything he could to make a move on Clark, but Gage was too strong and able to hold him off for the win. Moore finished second followed by Tyler McGhee with a career best 3rd, Adam Love 4th and Destin Grout came home 5th. Heat race winners were Adam Love and Cordell Moore. The Bessler’s U Pull N Save Hornets return to the track on Saturday May 20th.
Don Grace Dominates Purestock Feature!
Defending Impact Sports Purestocks Champion Don Grace, led every lap in both purestock events on the night. Grace led every lap in the heat race and led all 12 laps in the feature. Both races, his son Jonathan would finish second but was not able to challenge his dad. Don Grace, sporting a brand new car for the first time in 2017, made it look easy with no other driver able to keep up. After Don and Jon, the rest of the top 5 were Chris Combs, Chris Walterman and Andrew Carroll. The Impact Sports Purestocks return to the track June 17th.
