Inside Line Promotions – LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (May 29, 2018) – Giovanni Scelzi produced an eye-opening weekend with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions and World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
Scelzi, who was driving for Bernie Stuebgen, scored a pair of career-best fifth-place finishes during All Star events in Ohio before capping the holiday weekend by earning a career-best eighth-place result with the World of Outlaws in Indiana.
“It’s hard to go in figuring out what your expectations are,” he said. “We were a lot more prepared this time. I felt better going into last week than any week before. Going to new tracks is tough, but they’re all round.”
Scelzi opened the action last Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, where he qualified third quickest in his group and placed third in a heat race to lock into the 15th starting position in the main event.
“We got stronger as the race went on,” he said. “I moved around on the track and felt like I could make progress everywhere. A few times I got stuck behind guys because the track was so slick and hard that guys were sliding around, which made it tough to pass. Toward the end of the race we really made up some ground by running the bottom lane.”
Scelzi rallied from 15th to post the fifth-place finish out of 43 competitors.
Saturday’s All Star show at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio, rained out. The team ventured to Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio, on Sunday for the inaugural Bob Hampshire Classic, which featured 37 drivers.
Scelzi set quick time during his group’s qualifying session before ending fourth in a heat race. That earned a spot into the dash, in which he finished where he started – fifth. Scelzi started the A Main on the inside of the fifth row.
“It’s a high-speed, small place,” he said. “It’s faster than anywhere I’ve been on that small. It takes time to get going at a place like that and I found comfort in the main event. We made a few changes and we were really good in the feature. I got up to sixth or seventh, but we lost a couple of spots in traffic. Then we got going back by those guys at the end.”
Scelzi’s late rally netted another fifth-place result.
The weekend concluded on Sunday at Lawrenceburg Speedway with the World of Outlaws and 34 racers vying for the top prize during the Memorial Day Spectacular presented by KOI Auto Parts.
“We were a little off on gearing in qualifying and ended up 10th quick,” he said. “We were only two spots out of the front row for a heat race, which is where you needed to be.”
Scelzi’s fourth-place run in a heat race lined him up on the outside of the seventh row for the main event.
“We had some good restarts early in the main event to get into the top 10,” he said. “I think we were up to sixth at one point. The restarts at the end are so hectic and we gave up a couple of positions after being slid. The competition is really deep and they’re the best in the world. To get out of there with a top 10 was a great ending to the weekend.”
Scelzi’s eighth-place finish was his best with the World of Outlaws and it marked his 10th top 10 of the season.
